I like to think of myself as a "cool mom", but as I am now 40 I am not so sure of that anymore....

The Drama of Dressing a Four Year Old

December 13, 2017 by thiscoolmom Leave a Comment

Getting my daughter dressed is a daily task that I do not look forward to.  Whether it’s picking out an outfit for pre-K or putting on pajamas on at night, there are typically lots of tears, yelling, stomping and just craziness.  For this reason, I let her dress herself a majority of the time because my nerves just can’t take it.  Sometimes though, I need her to look somewhat presentable, so she does not have control over her outfit.  It’s difficult because she is PICKY and very particular.  Below is a list of clothes my 4 yo refuses to wear, along with some of her reasoning.

  1. Bottoms that are not super tight around her ankles
  2. Bottoms that are loose in general
  3. Bottoms that are not leggings
  4. Jeans (will wear jeggings though!)
  5. Jean shorts
  6. Pants that have a button (she can’t button and refuses to learn)
  7. Shirts with bell sleeves (she thinks they are ugly)
  8. Shirts with 3/4 length sleeves (she can’t handle when the sleeve does not touch her wrist)
  9. Cold shoulder shirts/sweatshirts/sweaters (makes her too cold)
  10. Hoodies, unless they have a zipper (must be a color she approves of)
  11. Socks that are too long (cannot reach her kneee)
  12. Socks that are too short (leggings need to be able to tuck into socks)
  13. Socks that make “her feet hurt”
  14. Underwear that gives her wedgies
  15. Bikinis- “I don’t want anyone to look at me”
  16. Dresses that fall below her knee- “TOOO LONG!”
  17. Dresses that are too short
  18. Overalls- “They are WEIRD”
  19. “Furry” boots  (Uggs have been ok the last few days though, so we will see if that lasts)
  20. Fleece pajama sets (bc the pants are “not tight enough”)
  21. Barrettes- “Too hurty” (Yes, she uses the word “hurty)
  22. Sweatpants- “Too loose and look like a boy”
  23. Sweaters- “Too itchy and hot”
  24. Flip flops – “Too hurty”
  25. Winter hats with pom poms on top (This is a new development so she has been wearing mine)
  26. North Face jackets  (No idea why -just a firm NO)
  27. Shirts that are not long enough to tuck into her leggings
  28. Shirts that are “too long”
  29. Button up shirts
  30. Capri pants
  31. Turtlenecks
  32. Mesh Shorts- “Too loose”
As you can see from the above list, she pretty much only wears leggings with long sleeve shirts that are the perfect length.  Sometimes a tutu- depends on the day.  I mean, is this normal?  Am I raising a complete fashionista diva-child?  Have you been through this with your kids?  Help!!!  I fear that this daily struggle is taking years off of my life.
