Whole30: Week One Wrap-up

For those that don’t know, my hubs and I started the Whole30 and today is Day 7.  I cannot believe it has been a week! We decided that a detox was needed, and wanted to drop a few lbs and inches as a bonus.  As I have mentioned before, I am quite the yo-yo dieter, but the Whole30  isn’t considered a diet.  The reason that I wanted to try this way of eating is that it is a jumpstart into a healthier way of eating- for life.  It is supposed to reset your attitude towards food. For example, after 30 days, I should want to reach for an apple instead of a handful of Pizza Flavored Goldfish (my fave).  Now I know that I will eat my beloved fishies again, but my goal for after this 30-day plan is to incorporate more veggies and fruit into my diet and less sugar and non-whole foods.

Lots of people I have talked to have never heard of the Whole30, so I am going to break it down very easily.

NO DAIRY

NO GRAINS

NO ALCOHOL

NO LEGUMES

NO ADDED SUGAR

NO CARRAGEENAN, MSG, and SULFITES (read labels!)

NO JUNK FOOD

This seems cray cray, right?  Again, I am shocked that this is something I am actually doing.  For more info & insight, you can visit Whole30.com.  The site has a TON of really great info, forums, etc.  There are also a lot of great Facebook groups & Whole30 Instagrammers who post delicious recipes. Pinterest has also been very helpful.

SO, we completed week one.  It has been hard saying goodbye to my wine, but I am surviving.  I also have been missing coffee with half and half, and snack foods. Like fishies.  It is hard to offer advice and guidance since we are newbies, but I can offer some thoughts after eating this way for 7 days.

  1. Prep your meals.  Luckily, hubs is the preparer so I don’t do much of this.
  2. Make sure you have emergency food. There were a few instances where I was light-headed and ate a compliant Rx Bar (there are a few of these that are OK for the Whole30) and was thankful that I had them on hand. Also good- almonds, apples, and watermelon.
  3. There are ups and downs the first week- fight through.  Every morning I wake up, I feel amazing.  Nightime – aka wine time and snack time- is the worst for me.

With 23 days remaining, I (kind of) see a light at the end of the tunnel.  I will update at the end of week 2, and perhaps log my meals if I remember.  If you have completed the Whole30 and have advice or tips/recipes, please comment!

This is awesome!!! Have you heard about ketones and Ketosis?! I noticed you noticed me and I’d love to hear more about the eating. Sounds very much like the Keto diet. If you haven’t heard of it before maybe we can share! Hope you have a great day and keep up the awesome work! I know it’s hard but you got this and even better you have an accountability partner in your hubby!
